Almost every garage door call starts the same way: something broke, and the homeowner wants to know whether it’s worth fixing or whether it’s time for a new door. Here’s how to think it through.

When Repair Is the Right Call

  • The panels are straight. If the door itself isn’t bent, dented in multiple places, or warped, there’s no structural reason to replace it.
  • It’s a single-component failure. A broken spring, worn rollers, a bad cable, or an opener that quit are all normal wear items on an otherwise healthy door. These run $125–$350 in most cases.
  • The door is under 15 years old. Most quality doors have a 20–30 year lifespan when maintained, so a mid-life repair is usually the cheaper path.

When Replacement Makes More Sense

  • Multiple panels are damaged from impact, storm debris, or years of sun exposure warping the material.
  • You’re on your third or fourth repair for the same door within a couple of years — at some point the labor cost of repeated fixes outweighs installing a new door once.
  • The door predates modern safety sensors or doesn’t support a secure, modern opener.
  • You want better insulation. Houston’s summers make an insulated door noticeably more comfortable in an attached garage.

The Real Numbers

A typical repair in the Houston area runs $125–$350 depending on what failed. A full new installation runs $750–$2,200 depending on door size and whether it’s insulated. See our full pricing breakdown or the Garage Door Buying Guide.
